U14 Girls Advance to State Cup Round of 16 for 2nd year in a row The Breakers Girls 91 U14 White team advanced to the 2006 State Cup round of 16 over this past weekend. On Sunday, March 26 they traveled to Lodi, CA and played against teams from Stockton and Central Valley. Their first game against Stockton they won 1:0 on a goal by Catherine Sordo off of a corner kick by Emma Littlefield. The defense was outstanding with Stephanie Busch, Dana Gambello, Sara Lezin, Hailey Worthen and Carly Bagnall all having solid performances. In their second game, the Breakers played against league rival Central Valley. Needing only a tie, they fell behind early in the first half, giving up a penalty kick. The play was end-to-end for the rest of the game. Late in the second half, Michelle Hunter scored an equalizing goal on a ball bouncing in the penalty area. The game ended in a 1:1 tie. The Breakers advanced to the round of 16 to be played on the weekend of April 8/9. Breakers coach Mike Arzabal thought the players did an outstanding job considering. "Due to the rain, we have not had any scrimmages or practice games. Considering that, the effort was tremendous. We have a number of new players that are still trying to learn how to play together. We will only get better." This is the second year in a row this group of girls have advance out of the first round of State Cup. |
